A new trail between Sasamat Lake in Belcarra Regional Park and Buntzen Lake has made it possible to enjoy a short, moderately easy hike between the 2 popular destinations.

Getting There

From St. Johns Street (Port Moody) or Barnet Hwy (Coquitlam), go north on Knowles Rd. to Ioco Rd. Turn left onto Ioco Rd., continue to 1st Ave. and turn right. Follow 1st Ave. as it becomes Bedwell Bay Rd to the White Pine Beach entrance. Park at White Pine Beach.

The Hike

Begin this hike by heading out on the Buntzen Ridge Trail. You will find the trailhead on the upper end of the vehicle loop in parking lot D. Here you will see a signpost that sends you in the right direction.

10 minutes into the hike you will cross a power line and then head steeply upwards through a forest of tall, second growth trees. When you come to the junction with Sugar Mountain Trail you should go left. You are now heading towards the ridge where you will meet the Diez Vistas trail from Buntzen Lake and emerge into the open at Pipeline Pass. Now you can climb up to a nice spot which overlooks part of Buntzen Lake and enjoy a bit of lunch. If you have the time and energy you can also climb up a further 150 m (500 ft) to the first viewpoint on the Diez Vistas trail. From here you will see views of Sasamat Lake, Bedwell Bay and Indian Arm.

When you've finished taking in the views head back down the Sugar Mountain Trail , past the trail junction where you came out earlier, and keep going until you meet the power line. From here, go west and climb up to the gate on the White Pine access road. Go left and pick up the trail that's marked "Beach" on your right hand side. This will join the Sasamat Lake Loop Trail. Go to the right and 15 minutes later you'll be back at your car.
